One of the best things my parents did was refusing to have political views in front of me so I never internalized it as a normal thing for adults to do

We had some mainland Chinese neighbors in faculty housing and they served us a gorgeous duck Thanksgiving one year when I was five Pretty sure they were refugees The dad had like two PhDs and had been forced to work as a coal miner before escaping
