It was an older house Grandparents traveled a lot after retirement; all their relics went to the basement There was a witch doll-statuette in the next room, and down the hall they kept a terrifying Thai demon mask in the laundry room And a bear rug by the couch where I slept

Basement generally was unfinished--really hard tile, windows at garden level so you could see under the porch I had feared that basement my entire life

The TV was an older big screen, one of those CRTs they kept in a wooden housing So My usual routine was, I would watch Star Trek, turn off the TV, then turn out the light at the foot of the couch before buryng myself in blankets and closing my eyes hard until I fell asleep

But I just Had the feeling the basement didn't want me there Later in my life I had a dream I was visiting and felt compelled to go to the basement bedroom at the end of the hall And dig through the tile There was a corpse buried there in the dream, but it wasn't dead

So--one night I went through my usual ritual, and was buried under a blanket--come to think of it the blanked is on my couch now, an heirloom--and out of nowhere the TV turned on Full volume No signal, pure static blaring I jumped up and jabbed the power button No effect

I think I scrambled to a light switch and had to unplug the thing to get it to stop

I did not sleep in the basement after that.

This is an excellent story! (I'm still getting used to Twitter format; apparently I still don't notice when there's more to a thread than the first tweet, sorry!!)
