One of the best things my parents did was refusing to have political views in front of me so I never internalized it as a normal thing for adults to do

You realize that almost everything is political, right? Even this stance of yours, that it's not normal for adults to have political views, is inherently political.

I wasn't aware of Wickard v. Filburn, hmm. Gonna read up on it. Can you give me a primer?

Lmao yeah I get the way I put it is very reductive. Same kind of argument certainly can be applied in dangerous ways. Only if Twitter allowed long-form discussions, sigh!!

I don't entirely disagree with the position I imagine your advancing, in a positive sense; only in a normative sense Like there's an angle from which I think it's true, but everyone is made worse off to the extent they recognize this and act accordingly Basically an infohazard

Why do you think it's an infohazard? I'd imagine that this aphorism "almost everything is political" makes everyone more aware of their responsibility as an individual, isn't that a good thing? Even if they don't understand the whole argument in a nuanced way.

Sure if people agreed Maybe . . . maybe In practice it tends to make people fight about minutiae, as you see with *gestures at everything* I mean I think you would be hard pressed to call this a social improvement over baseline :/

Yeah I totally agree, the mainstream political discourse is mostly shit, just a lot of finger-pointing. We have to focus on the bigger problems.
