So it was OK to spend some of the most important years of your life that are available for skill acquisition on completely random stuff, and it made no difference, huh? Because of course the labor market doesn't require any skills at all, just this diploma.

OK, but it needs more than "an adult" trying to sell you a bean stalk. Ultimately it needs to be the parents who provide advice, and while I'm sure they can't say "study chemistry", they could certainly point out the consequences of taking on a few hundred thousand in debt.

No, I just disagree that there was a mass "brainwashing" going on. And you can tell because the majority of kids do not have huge student loans and the majority of those that do are gainfully employed. Average debt is 30K, but median debt is much lower

So when I see someone saying "I have a fine arts degree and am 300K in debt", I don't think "this is a brainwashed victim". That's just not a reasonable view of the landscape.

I personally don't know anyone with that much debt, but at least you see these signs held up by students. Being 30K in debt is not a big deal in exchange for an education that is even halfway useful. It's less than the price of a new car.

Who even buys used cars! And that's the debt not the cost. Non-financed payments + wage/experience opportunity cost is real

Interest on student loans is around 3% per annum, and can be deferred. Median monthly payment is $222. That means if the degree raised your hourly wage by $1.25 per hour, you're better off with the loan.

How much is a marginal 4 years of experience worth?
