if you want to drag an answer out of someone regardless of whether they want to answer or not by all means use vertical questions, sometimes this is appropriate, like if they show up with a couple of black eyes they got from falling down some stairs

naturally one must scale their directness as a function of the social acumen of the questioned not everyone grew up in a guess culture and learned that language conveys more than the isolated literal sense of words and we should be understanding of differently abled new yorkers
