Anyone get the impression reporters have just given up on things that are important I don't even mean the election which is fairly boring But like Three Gorges Dam gets zero coverage and its collapse could plausibly have a greater impact than Covidhttps://twitter.com/ForecasterEnten/status/1287910603705716736 …

Surely there's private interest in this? Loooooooot of economic impact, this would wreck tons of supply lines Is the US private sector even cognizant of this? Doing any contingency planning?

So would an asteroid hitting the Earth, or a nuclear war. Yes, I think the likelihood of the 3 gorges dam collapsing this year is negligible, and I think you're getting hyped up over nothing. I'm happy to take bets on this.

I’m not informed and don’t consider myself in a position to bet without doing more research. I appreciate the offer though! Would you be up for explaining why you’re pretty sure the chance of catastrophe is negligible?

1. The 3 gorges dam is a gravity dam. Such dams are very strong, require little maintenance, and are earthquake-resistant. They do not fail suddenly without warning. 2. Water level in the dam was higher in November last year than in recent months. The dam has been tested to much

higher levels in past years e.g. when it was filled to 175m. 3. In any case, the peak inflow measured this year on 21st July was only 61,000 m3/s, which is far less than the dam's maximum discharge rate of 100,000 m3/s. So, the water levels can be dropped whenever.

4. So far the only evidence I've seen that argue for the dam being about to collapse have pointed to long-debunked stuff like the distorted Google satellite images. The Taiwanese news media make the same tired old arguments warning the dam is about to collapse year after year.
