I wonder how much of this is sunk cost rationalization. Therapy can easily cost 10x what a gym does (let alone friends and books).

There is also a human on the other side that might get sad if you stop going to therapy. Just like a personal trainer can help you go to the gym more often by feeling sad when you don't go and, maybe more importantly, relief when you go back again after not going for a while.
