.@ is useful at the beginning of a tweet because starting with an @ makes twitter treat it as a response --> less distribution in the middle of a tweet it has no effect and its just ppl copying what theyve seen others do, badly

Are you sure this is still true? I had experiences recently that suggested it had been disabled after the introduction of actual thread tracking.
