I've been thinking about how to keep my kids out of public schools since before I was married. Keeping close tabs on how my older sister is managing it. The environment is constantly changing and we face the added wrinkle of moving every couple of years

There are inherent advantages and disadvantages to this. I grew up that way and was always able to escape bad school systems because I was never there too long. Conversely I was ripped away from some of the greatest teachers and schools (one time mid school year).

Pods are a uniquely good fit for military life, but not very common, as DoD schools tend to be pretty good, but even there it's a very mixed bag and if course sometimes little or no choice.

I just think about how much more interesting my education would have been if my parents could have been more involved (and they were as involved as they could be). But I'm also the sum total of my experiences. Being physically bullied some places and accepted in others...

While I think I may have been a more educated, well rounded, and academically prepared person if I was homeschooled by my far more brilliant than me parents, I also would definitely be a weird homeschooled kid. Moving every 1-2 years saved me, socially, from being a pariah.

I actually reinvented and modulated my behavior to survive in many new school settings, and again, there were positives and negatives to this, but I would not be the person I am today without that and consider it a net positive.

There's advantages to being a perpetual outsider that makes you more critical of systems and authority in a way. There's also advantages to learning how to make new friends in diverse contexts if you're not a naturally gregarious person (as I am in no way).

However, I've been told by a few superior officers in OER Counselings that I can come across as aloof and even condescending, so I just think how much worse I would be if I wasn't able to modulate and be humbled so many times growing up, and if instead I was insulated at home

And thank God for those leaders willing to say that to my face when I ask them for candid feedback.

TL;DR: I don't want my kids to bear the social cost of being weird homeschooled kids (no disrespect to the many non-wierd homeschooled kids I know)

Yeah I definitely consider/worry about that. I think there are some ways around it but gotta be cognizant Otoh hunch is there are a lot of bad effects of public school socialization that are just taken as normal but in fact are super awful Hmm 🤔

Thanks. I know this must be the case, as despite the stigma I've known plenty of normal HS people (they tend to marry other HS kids, I've noticed). I think the decision will be made easier once I know my kids and research the local schools. It's all hypothetical now.
