Thanks! If the objects of religious belief oughtn't be physical things, what are they? Can the belief be right or wrong in the same way as belief in elliptical orbits? How does that belief compare to my son's belief in magic, which he knows isn't real, or mine in the USA mythos?

OK, you mean that "the archetype of vampires" and the "idea of gravity" are two mental models with not much difference in their validity? 1) Knowing about gravity allows you to e.g. land on the moon, or do asteroid mining. Knowing about vampires doesn't. (to be cntd.)

2) Archetype of vampires has much less universality than the idea of gravity. Vampires could be imagined by intelligent lifeforms with blood, but not by, say, solid-state based lifeforms with no internal fluids. Gravity is useful for a vast array of possible intelligences.
