My PhD supervisor supervised a lot of students over a long career. I was one of his last. We had an event in his honour and tried to gather all his students who could be located. The difference in life stories between the eldest and youngest was remarkable.

The eldest students had stories about how, as they were getting ready to graduate, they had a hard time choosing between job offers from multiple prestigious universities. I was in my fifth year of postdoc at the time, with not even one job offer in sight.
