      this is actually interesting what if eventually people learn that grad school is a fucking awful deal with no job prospects then they stop going then schools get even more fucked without a supply of TAs and postdocs willing to work for peanuts hmmmmmmmmmm

          So that they can do the whole “there’s a dire shortage of stem workers” thing again, increase skilled immigration well beyond scope and bring down wages more generally and (per @EricRWeinstein)also further saturate academia with people incapable of disagreeing with orthodoxy.

          I think schools could contract PhD & postdoc populations by 25% without major deleterious effects. Lecturers are about as cheap for teaching help, salaried technicians for research only about 30% pricier.

          very, very few techs are capable of doing PhD level research tho tbf prob >25% of PhD students are also not capable of doing PhD level research, so...
