So...I'm of the age, and have relatives/family friends in the politics 'biz' in the Midwest, where I remember this shift happening. And that Shor interview is one of the best things I've read on politics in a long time, and I'm sure the Internet did help along polarization...

...but I'm pretty sure that trend predates it, even if it *looks* like it emerged at the same time. It started to get harder to activate conservative Democrats to vote in their own economic interests in the 90s.
