@halvorz I'd bet money that it's <0.01% of infections of man.

oh yah i'm pretty skeptical that there are many, if any pathogenic archaea, although i wouldn't rule out the possibility of some the real question is WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY its so weird and none of the explanations i've seen put forward are particularly convincing

wait, your question is why would they exist or why wouldn't they exist?

why they don't exist we have bacterial pathogens, fungal pathogens, amoeba pathogens, various protozoal pathogens, animal parasites... but no known archaeal pathogens

If you ignore all host-pathogen arms race factors like binding and immunity and imagine the human as a passive incubator, we don't have the extreme niches where archaea are found except that there are anaerobic gut compartments. I predict a disease of overgrowth of one of these

although we think of archaea as extremophiles, many aren't! they're all over the place, it's just that the earliest ones identified were extremophiles, and they do tend to do better in such places than bacteria

that said, one of my idle speculations is that their association with humans and other animals is a relatively recent development, evolutionarily speaking, and maybe they haven't had the time to develop the mechanisms necessary to be a successful pathogen

at some point i'd like to try looking for evidence of this phylogenetically

hmm seems like humans would be similarly unprepared to repel an archaeopathogen tho? uncertain of this never actually read the immune system sections

the beauty of the vertebrate adaptive immune system is that it is entirely organism agnostic you can raise antibodies against nearly anything, including shit like gold and minerals this is why i think sci fi stories with alien pathogens are pretty implausible

any bug that has no evolutionary background in fighting with adaptive immune systems is likely gonna get steamrolled in short order
