The Basilisk looms so much larger in the minds of outsiders viewing the rationalists than in the minds of the rationalists themselves. Out of 100s of weird ideas discussed on LW this is one of the few that has gone viral. I think it says more about outsiders than rationalists.

Didn't a bunch of rationalists lose their shit about it pretty hard back in the day though? Heard tell of breakdowns & anxiety attacks and etc.
