i think ranking exacerbates the problem described - if the Model you are beholden to optimizes for P(click) then the wise decision for potential journalists is to make something people like to click on, which is going to be punditry and cynical clickbait

the under explored side is -- who really wants the investigative work? who will pay for the knowledge that coca-cola is killing union bosses in ghana? how much are buyers paying? what are their motives? if you muddy these qs up you end up with infotainment garbage a la jon oliver
