One thing that doesn't seem to have been challenged so far is the fact that Civil War casualty numbers - generally understood as "Americans" - always include the South as well. Question for the room: should the Confederate dead be counted as "Americans"?

The inclusion of Civil War dead together as "Americans" was part of the Reconciliation Cause historiography meant to "heal the nation" but was really the North capitulating to the Lost Cause and Southern ideas of the war. It depends on what you think an American is.

Ask yourself. Someone goes to fight with ISIS or the Iraqis against the US. They kill US soldiers. Then they come back to the US and try to reintegrate into American society. Are they Americans? Do we build monuments to them? Are you proud of them?
