what matters (if anything) about the open letter is that people who are prominent are signalling a break with another faction, publicly; and specifically people who might be expected to be hostile to the Real Outgroup its a flag in the ground for a media faction

analogy: if half the College of the Cardinals signs an open letter regarding Donatism, that matters in the Church getting further signatures from Bob the Anglican in London and from Ayatollah Khamenei? This would confuse the issue at best

1. they’re not arguing for an all-or-nothing stance 2. the letter’s aim is political - the point is not to arbitrarily announce feelings publicly, but to effectively suggest to those who question the notion that cancel culture is a real issue that it may in fact be a real issue
