One time my church is celebration and some guy tried to sell his homemade fireworks. Most beautiful tar black mushroom cloud I’ve ever seen.

In the early 90s -- 92 or 93 -- Pittsburgh had an amazing 4th of July. We watched from the Point -- the tip of downtown where the rivers meet -- to watch fireworks launched from downriver, by the baseball stadium.

Unfotunately the air was very still that evening and foggy, and the smoke made it denser. Soon nothing was visible but vague flashing inside a cloud -- much like a bad PBS science program's animation of neurons firing in the brain. The fireworks show was ruined. (Made up later.)
