costly in what way? like people will be mad at you for favoring certain papers over others?

that too somewhat poorly phrased by me more: it takes time to put such lists together, audience will be small, audience incurs costs trying to figure out which lists are even worthwhile

Also a lot of times this info is highly contextual. If I know you well I know what info is highly relevant to you. If I'm talking to a general audience I have to explain and contextualize each bit (which I may not even know how to make explicit)

I mean that's specific to the "recommending papers" example but my point is about gossip more broadly: it's secretive and therefore indicates a lack of openness in a community there will always be a need for secrecy, but idk if I'd say "more gossip = healthier community"
