Not even joking bring back earmarks: earmarks meant politicans had an invested intrest in the system working so they could say “hey I got you a train station/highway/medical center”

Literally, the entire political system started to burn once we removed the grease of earmarks. Bipartisan in most cases was really "Republicans supported Democratic bill because Republicans got spending project X in exchange for support for the bill."

...Substack is that in the latter case everyone is on their own and exposed to reputational risk. In the old times your boss could cover you or move you to a different beat. But if you’re an independent writer it’s risky to go against the grain.
