I was discussing this with
@selentelechia a month ago maybe, and she noticed it. She's almost a decade younger and I think that makes a difference in this matter Some memories:3 replies 0 retweets 68 likesShow this thread -

[Apologies in advance, I'm going to piggyback on some tweets in this thread with my own experiences, because I'm too lazy / prolix to make a coherent thread of my own.] My first memory of all: seeing Watergate hearings. Had no idea what was going on but people did not look happy.

My family was not political (nor college educated) but being sponge-like I watched network news every evening and 60 mins on Sunday, then in high school added Wall St Week, McLaughlin Group and MacNeil/Lehrer. So many awful things happened in the 70s and 80s. I heard about them.

Weathermen and Unabomber. Airline hijackings and disasters. Oil crisis. Steep inflation in 74-75 and again 79-81. Iran hostages on the news every night. Lennon killed, Pope shot, Reagan shot, Sadat killed...all within 12 months. Beirut barracks. Soviet-Afghan war.

Oh and Jonestown. Penn Square bank. S&L scandal, Abscam, Iran-Contra. Earl Butz. Packwood. Rostenkowski. Challenger -- that one was hard. It was the rare launch I didn't have to get up early for. Watched it in the school library. Horrible.

Oh and the awful winter of 78-79. And Three Mile Island. PanAm 103 coming after Reagan's 1986 airstrikes on Libya was deeply troubling in the sense that those poor Scottish people were not interested in global politics but it was interested in them.

Spoiler alert: now is worse. (I guess I'll keep doing this as a single thread and comment-RT some of yours along the way, for less mess.)
