This is quite similar to the ‘free will’ debate. Regardless of whether free will exists or not, people behave and interact much better if they believe they have free will because no free will is an excuse for bad behavior. Therefore, free will exists because we need it to exist.

Ergo, perpetual ingroup victim status and oppressive outgroup status, while perhaps partially accurate, are both catastrophically counterproductive.
