I mean if we are allowed to make them up like mythical Chinese emperors. sure I know a bunch of american great men. you wouldn't know them, but they are great.

I love the Church, but the worst thing it ever did was spread the notion that mythological = false.

yeah but There's no proof hes great. Someone named Yu may have existed but the stories by now may be greatly exaggerated. I assume you aren't a catholic who believes in the miraculous actions of Muhammad either.

There's the entire body of Chinese texts and tradition. I don't know why that isn't valid.

Well yeah. Once the consensus is that myths are false, of course false myths are going to proliferate. We have the records of Washington's life. The consensus is that none of those stories are true.

Replying to @MencianLegalism @eigenrobot and
A "myth" that defies common sensibility and consensus knowledge is no true myth. Aesop wrote fables and everyone knew those were fake.

Myths were literally true when mythology was a part of consensus knowledge. Schliemann decided to bank on the veracity of myth, and it paid off. No one is banking on an archaeological excavation of Washington's Cherry tree.
