yep, I assume its hijacking the cell input mechanisms to infuse itself, its one of those "viruses are neat (also scary, but neat)" things. Phages are famous for that, and the Rona tricks a cell into saying "hey bruh I'm cool lower your shields bruh lets combine"

the spike proteins are expressed on cell membranes which the virus then folds around its nucleocapsid material (proteins and genes) the same mechanism that the spikes use to fuse viral membranes w host membranes can sometimes be used to fuse cells together
