worth noting that the way the federal government hires people (and the job security they have once hired) is very wonky so, despite my hatred of schools, it seems likely that degree requirements are actually a good idea for the federal government

Credentialing is an unavoidable problem. Any plan destroying schools need to solve credentialing, like any plan destroying police need to solve sense of safety.

there are still a lot of unanswered questions about this for me, but according to Caplan, schooling signals intelligence, conscientiousness, and conformity the first 2 can obviously be signaled in far less costly (time + money) ways

my prediction is that conformity can be signalled more efficiently only by changing the culture and the expectations people have i believe it was scott alexander who pointed out the governments power to set culture—he used the example of seatbelt laws helping make it a norm...

...to wear seatbelts. i think likewise if the government just up and defunded public schools, this would go a long way toward changing the culture so that spending 16 years in school was no longer necessary for conformity
