I’m but a small humble account so I’ll collect some disorganized thoughts in your replies. I found SSC sometime in 2013. Bryan Caplan sang its praises on his blog:

“I find fascinating new things to read every day. But it’s been a long time since I found a fascinating new thinker to read–someone who makes me say, “Tell me everything.”Then about two weeks ago, I discovered the mind of Scott Alexander. I’ve been reading him heavily ever since.

(...) Last thought: Reading Scott is humbling. Why? Because he’s better than me on several dimensions I deeply value. He’s calmer. He’s more patient. He’s probably more inter-disciplinary. And ideas aren’t even his day job.” Btw. turns out it was in 2014, not 2013.

Back then I was a lonely, depressed (though I didn’t know it yet) student at Rice University. I’m a night owl and sometimes I say “screw it” and allow myself to stay up as long as I want. I stayed most of one weekend in the Fondren Library reading classic SSC posts and comments

I was familiar with Less Wrong and didn’t realize Scott posted there too under a different pseudonym. But I knew I found a mind that I’ll discuss ideas with for hours upon hours, even if mostly in my head. There’s a joy in finding someone who takes ideas very seriously.
