My experience has been a gradual ratcheting up of both, in alternating sequence. I get a little more liked, it allows me to be more honest, which gets me more liked, which allows me to be more honest...

Limiting factor for me has been the neuroses that were baked-in by painful social interactions as a kid. Caused me to self-destruct out of fear that I was going to become too honest and become disliked for it.
