maybe people are reading the words silently instead of sounding them out loud idk i'm very sensitive to meter and it always confuses me when people aren't, in the same way it confuses me when people like can't keep time or clap beats

Yeah, meter doesn't feel like a consciously trained skill to me - it's just an involuntary "wait, what?" by my mental voice when a line doesn't seem to scan right, like a grammar error would be.

When I studied poems in school we had to say for each one which kind of rhyme and meter it has

Also we did proofs in literature class. If we studied a novel we had to write a 2-page essay proving it is a novel. And so on for each literary species.
