Things That Might Be Done: A List to be updated as I have ideas

      1. Block lists Self-explanatory. Want to identify certain bad actors and limit exposure. Have ideas about how to do this effectively but will discuss in other fora.

      2. Freedom of Navigation operations Explanation: China claims control over certain waterways that are viewed by other countries as international. The US Navy routinely sends warships through these waters without consulting China to maintain the principle that they are open.

A common tactic used by illiberal groups is arranging for someone to be destroyed for speech that was heretofore well within civil bounds. Analogously to the Navy, one might attempt to defend open turf in a principled manner.https://www.stripes.com/news/pacific/navy-warships-conduct-back-to-back-freedom-of-navigation-operations-in-south-china-sea-1.627890 …

Executing this is tricky, because certain outlets (eg: Quillette) that attempt this end up being simply written out of the Overton window and ignored . . . or something. The dynamic isn't legible to me yet but it seems like cracking it might suggest a counter. Thinking on this.

          3. Shift to an assertive stance. We have spent years falling back on our heels. This needs to stop.https://youtu.be/Ms_WY0s_1XM

.@selentelechia has a favorite post that describes the psychology of a player in MtG who reaches a point where he decides he is going to lose the game. At that point, he stops playing to win, and starts making moves that rationalize what he perceives to an inevitable loss.

Cribbing from Ken Kesey, this is accepting the role another has chosen for you in their story rather than acting as the protagonist in your own. This makes overcoming a hostile narrative nearly impossible. You write your own defeat into every line.

We don't have to live like this. Irony aside our ideas and values are extremely fucking good when measured against the fideistic puerility arrayed against us. We ought to comport ourselves with confidence and dignity when asserting them and deprecate desperate undertones.

Another option is attacking *their* flank. By Overton-defenestrating the more radicals among them.

yes, if you can't compete with the whole block aim for the most radical -well-worded statement that won't trigger everybody -substantial theoretical backing -pre-mobilization to defend statement & prevent mobb snowball -policing of far right/too extreme support (poisonous)

There are some adverse selection effects at work. Some people regard controversy as an end in itself, and so a "free-thinking" publication is going to end up publishing stuff written by third-rate wannabes for whom being "cancelled" is a step up in the status game.

a free thinking publication needn't promise to publish any old edgy thing though. quality criteria can still be there. just minus any PC filter.

points of reference re. coordination efforts. EFF's 'batsignal' initiative https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/07/bat-signal-internet … Free speech union (love the idea. dislike their main spokesperson) https://freespeechunion.org/

Also tricky because a lot of the people being cancelled don't actually *like* free speech. They aren't libertarians or classical liberals with a principled stance, but conservatives upset that they're the ones being censored rather than the ones doing the censoring.
