the really chilling thing for me was seeing 1. @ itsbirdemic 's timeline where he is basically doing nothing but tweet for Hsu to be fired 2. a leak of the 500 economists who signed a petition to take down Uhlig. I /knew/ some of those people

I think the concern is not that people have the energy to do this in one-offs, but rather that it's institutionalized and mechanized. If you take some heads and establish a precedent, you have a new norm, and punishing future deviants is nearly automatic.
