In the 1980s my dad was publishing anti-Communist samizdat in Siberia. Back then the communist had guns and gulags, not Twitter. It was a gamble, but it paid off.

Scott is a good man and has many fans. If someone publishes a hit piece, we should calmly explain why they're lying. No one will be sent to the gulag for this.

I think people are way overrating how much power the NYTimes has over those who choose not to submit to it. And again, if it's Cade Metz then there's nothing I've read from him that would suggest he's even writing a hit piece. He's a nerd interested in ideas and technology.

I think you are looking at this too objectively. Even if journalists have no power to hurt you, the subject can feel like they do and that emotional harm is not something one can avoid with Pure Reason®

No, it can be avoided by people who believe in you (like I believe in Scott) standing by you publicly. Locking your account and going into hiding is the opposite, you're just leaving him out to be lied about.

Right, I've been meaning to ask @eigenrobot what locking is supposed to accomplish here. Like, I'd understand if Scott did that to protect himself, but why should his readers do that. Are we supposed to be worried that we will make him look bad, or that he will make us look bad?

      i. Less fuel for the fire. Controlling information is crucial in an information war. ii. The cost of exposure is higher for some than others. I'm more leaning toward going out shiny and chrome but I don't think that should be forced on anyone.

generally if youre going to make a Stand the last thing you want to do is hand over ammunition to the people who are about to charge your walls

It's a good question what gives them more ammunition. You have so many followers, do you trust that no one will screenshot something you said? That deleting a tweet won't be seen as admission of malfeasance? Those who lie will find something to lie about, idk if hiding will help.

If were literally conspiring against someone, it makes sense to hide information. But that's not what we're doing. Almost all rationalists are actively supporting the same good causes as everyone, aside from cancel culture.

I think Cancel Culture is the issue at hand Like we've maybe moved beyond "is cancel culture Good" to "can you be canceled for opposing cancel culture on principle while not having done anything else worthy of cancellation"

Exactly. We should fight to make the answer to the latter "Fuck No" for people in our tribe. How many people will actually fight for canceling anyone opposed to cancel culture? Are there more of them then us? Are they smarter or stronger than us? We've got this.

Attempting to cancel someone has no downside, but significant reputational and social upside. If society is selling free options to rational actors, you should expect them to buy as many as possible. Grey tribe could collectively have strong norms against doing this frivolously.
