seems to me that getting a phd and using it to gain institutional access as a research scientist in an industry lab is still a good career path

Both are correct. My estimate is 10% of employees are fanatics, 10% of employees supportive and outspoken, remainder some range of disinterested to hostile and we'll never know how much of each. You only hear from the 20%.
