i can’t speak for other asians, i don’t actually talk to other asians about asian stuff at all really. i like... can’t really work up the energy to care, personally? i don’t think schools should exist anyway lol
@krzhang would know more -
if i were in the business of talking to asians about asian stuff my agenda would be dominated by healing trauma so we can all be much sexier and embodied

Curious too ^ Especially considering the Indian system where 50% of seats in the best schools are reserved for their "affirmative action" equivalent. Leads to tons of resentment.

1/2 - Another n=1 datapoint here - think affirmative action is vital and necessary to improving outcomes for disadvantaged groups, fine to be excluded from this by race. But I wish it were instead based on income, so we could give more poor ppl seats at elite colleges
-
2/2 - Problem is that in a zero sum world, we could make a lot more room for good and for disadvantaged groups AND more Asians if we limited athletic and legacy preference

I haven’t thought ab it much—but i suspect all these issues distill down to clumsy metrics that necessarily get instated when trying to scale. AA is a vague means of trying to get to the core of what different qualities should be evaluated as contributing to a goal

Also important to consider that the role of a university, in particular Ivys, have shifted. Originally I believe connected strongly with humanities and athletics ... going to research a bit when and how different departments emerged

It's a world away for me. More concerned about what comes next rather than fighting over scraps.

i am only a half (and attend) so obviously huge “survivorship” bias among asians i know (who are outwardly of course positive) imo it just depends on what you think the purpose of elite schools are. i am not quite sure which makes me feel agnostic on this.

like, if the point is to act as a societal equalizer via good education, sure i guess if the point is to act as an “accelerator” for smart young people yeah no i guess it’s a little of both which makes it difficult some things are obviously wrong (eg white dominated sports)
