ok actual question once again I have noticed that "black" ("Black"?) is now being capitalized in news media I vaguely recall that recent historical practice was to use the non-capitalized variant Is there some kind of new guidance (???)

I noticed this, too, and it’s incorrect. It’s “black.” “African-American” is like saying “vagina” or “female”— correct but not preferred in common parlance.

“black” is also, for those of us with a colonial past, an ethnicity, not a skin color. Not all persons of dark color are “black” and not all “blacks” are persons of dark color. “Negro” should only be used academically and is considered outdated and offensive.

It's really interesting watching this play out so quickly. I don't have opinions about what is best (not being the referrent of the term) but my guess is that capitalized Black is going to be the new norm for everyone who wants to be Good in about five minutes. Huh. Thank you!
