This Chicago economist has angered a lot of his fellow econs. His engagement with #blacklives matter is to not to engage the issues, but launch into a sophomoric debate about language, and to condescendingly try to ridicule the movement. But it’s worse. It’s part of a pattern. https://twitter.com/haralduhlig/status/1270199700071821312 …

The thing is that "economics" as an academic field was actually the opposite of economical. The whole game was a prisoner's dillemma, instead of a creative, playful, curious, game of real life. Which is naturally economical, as real life hates wasting things.

Which? The fact that economics is a prisoner's dilemma game (where usually someone loses, because collaboration seems like a bad idea)? Or that life is naturally economical, since it hates to waste?

Do you mean the economics profession is a prisoners dilemma or economics the phenomenon? Pretty generally the latter doesn't hold and in fact most economic activity is based around mutual gain and going into econ has been pretty win/win historically

The "economics" that is taught in mainstream schools is the ideology that gives us the prisoner's dilemma game theory belief. But that's the opposite of real economy, where collaboration is almost always ideal, since it leaves everyone better off: mutual gain, as you say.

Game theory is interesting for sure (I loved it) but most of economic theory explicitly deals with the generation of prices and quantities in games that are very unlike PD. Also typically with so many actors that strategy is not super important regardless

PD is a neat teaching example for getting students to understand Nash equilibria, but overall games of that structure are pretty incidental to economics.

It's all prisoner's dilemma when you're talking about a zero-sum game like money. As compared to the real economy of life, which is infinitely creative, and positive sum, turning less useful things into more useful things, indefinitely.
