It's mixed up. Ultimately a lot of things in India end up depending on where you went to school or college. At the upper end, things are mixed enough to not matter to most - but as you go down the income spectrum, faultlines are still on fire & awareness is super high.

also, it's no complex, multi-dimensional hierarchy as such except that one group (~15% population) was badly suppressed - still is, in various parts The lot you see in US -- even many of the 1st gen immigrants would've stepped out. Income bracket/degrees are the new identity.
