When Frederick Douglass toured Ireland In the 1840s I believe he was asked to make that comparison during several of his speeches.

Yep. “There is no analogy between the two cases. The Irishman is poor, but he is not a slave. He may be in rags, but he is not a slave.” (This was written back in America 2 years later his speeches were somewhat more of back and forth affairs - but he refuted the comparison).

In at least one of his speeches he said that he had been accosted by people trying to make the comparison between them and trying to get him to agree that they were the same.

And it wasn’t him not being empathetic for Irish plight, seemed very respectful for the months he was in Ireland. Dude just really hated slavery.
