I have a similar experience that I wish to share with you apropos of nothing. My parents are huge 2nd amendment supporters, buckley-style conservatives. They support gun ownership for everyone but freaked out when I told them I would like a firearm one day.

The point I'm trying to make is that for some, "gun ownership" is (was?) also a symbol that didn't necessarily correspond to real-world behaviors.

I come from a long line of individuals (including myself) with vision and hand-eye coordination problems. My husband did buy a legal gun in Maryland and went through a lot of training and investigation to do so. Apparently he's really good at aiming the thing.

Then I discovered HIS dad was an army sharpshooter who laid down his rifles (and any notion of ever camping again) when he left the army, so. My people feel bad when they hit a squirrel with a car, though.
