minnesota thoughts 1. on reflection im genuinely impressed that they fired the cops on scene immediately. Seems v likely the main guy will be prosecuted. 2. are there any demands being made? given (1) what would they even be? 3. I do not have warm feelings toward MPD

4. I wish I could blame the rioting (not protesting, just the rioting bits) on out of state ppl but in fact minneapolis has a vibrant if not historically physically aggressive antifa presence

5. I wonder what % of people at protests are (i) people who want to start a riot constantly, (ii) people who just want to protest in a relarively chill manner, (iii) not especially political locals who are happy to just go with the flow wrt burning shit down opportunistically

wrt (iii): like, without endorsing it, I get it, there is something exciting and interesting about burning shit to the ground

6. wrt (5), I suspect there's a certain threshold of crowd density necessary to spark a riot thinking about this like combustion group (iii) is fuel-oxygen mixture, (i) is a spark, (ii) is idk atmospheric nitrogen or something? idk work in progress

7. this is probably going to be really bad for Minneapolis the Twin Cities are quite geographically spread out and while some neighborhoods (eg Northeast) have gentrified a lot I remember the state of things in the 90s and in those years much of Minneapolis was a wasteland

the suburbs are extremely nice, housing and schools are cheap and good, and its easy to move out and it seems like property damage is much more prevalent here than in the 2015ish BLM protests ---> capital flight?

Replying to @eigenrobot
I don't have a good mental model for this type of civil unrest. is it positive feedback or negative feedback? e.g. is it "the revolution is upon us" or "we've gotten all the rioting energy out of us and we're waking up hungover the next morning"

positive until its negative most likely
