hmmmmm in my current ds role i do better science than in most """"research""""""" environments i operated in theres significant variation across roles surely, but also: science as Publishing Important Papers using Approved Methods vs science as fuck around and find outhttps://twitter.com/ryxcommar/status/1265424862916628480 …

This is painfully true. Academia is absurdly far behind industry in terms of research quality in just about any area that makes contact with the market. Optimizing for profit/growth vs optimizing for papers/impact factor/citations are very different games.

I work in pure math, where in most areas if not for academia there wouldn't be any research because there's no profit in it.

Yes, was attempting to capture this with the qualifier "in just about any area that makes contact with the market" Math, physics, stats, etc would all fall into that category (limited direct market exposure, yet someone needs to do 'em)

No worries, I've done the same more times than I'd care to admit But yes I would definitely agree that CS is one of those areas. Better to do an internship at NVIDIA solving problem X than a year of college CS thinking in hypotheticals without skin in the game.

In many empirical fields, data quality is much, much better in industry Academic economists play around with these tiny barren datasets Then they go to Amazon for a 10x pay bump and get access to arbitrarily many observations and features at arbitrary granularity

Facebook was doing cutting edge soc/psych research before they got maumau'd into submission by academic competitors complaining about IRBs
