the continued existence of graphing calculators infuriates me these hobbyists are cool but students have to buy millions every year and for no purpose absolute worst way to learn math if you cant do it by hand use a computerhttps://twitter.com/mutual_ayyde/status/1265500119476121601 …

Gonna play devil's advocate for a minute and say calculators are good actually. Once you've mastered arithmetic, it's a waste of time to keep doing long division by hand in 9th grade Algebra.

Once you've mastered trig functions, it's a waste of time to be looking up sin(x) in a printed table during sophomore Calculus.

You want a tool for this, but the tool can't be *too* powerful. It needs to be just capable enough to speed the student's progress, but not smart enough to pass the class on its own.

It is embarrassing that TI hasn't innovated at all in decades, yes. But the basic idea is sound. You've got (1) an intuitive input keypad (2) an amazingly durable device--seriously these things are Nokia-phone-meme levels of indestructible.

(3) different amounts of computing power available, so you can have just enough for a given course level (4) no network connectivity of any kind (5) and now, a little bit harder to hack number (3).

Calculators are good, actually, but like textbooks, we've allowed a malicious cartel to monopolize their manufacture.

its good to be able to evaluate transcendental function in the field and I support the use of a small scientific calculator for this
if your doing homework hardly even worthwhile to evaluate just leave the symbols in place who cares what the actual values are
