CCP is terrible at PR like you can do this or you can tell a Peaceful Rise story where everyone you rule with an iron fist likes you but really not both at the same time https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/china-signals-plan-to-take-full-control-of-hong-kong-realigning-citys-status/2020/05/21/2c3850ee-9b48-11ea-ad79-eef7cd734641_story.html …

Their timing is so good though - US and UK both distracted by virus, anti-chinese sentiment isn't quite hot enough to mobilize, fear of virus stifles the unrest in HK. One might ask how could they not do it now?

Any thoughts on how HK could even respond? I hate the narrative shifting right now against Chinese in the US but I can't think of a better solution than a full war. Especially with Belt and Road + recession causing lots of consolidation of property into chinese companies

I feel awful for Hong Kong and I think they're just screwed. No one is going to intervene, the cavalry is not coming. I think their options are "submit quietly" or "die gloriously" and sitting across an ocean I wouldn't presume to tell them which course to take.

US leaders have been asleep at the wheel since 2001. It's shameful. I'm sorry, I only have despair right now.
