speaking for myself only, I'm focusing on R, spatial analysis (GIS and derivatives), sql, and enough C++ to be useful on someone else's project. I already teach econometrics so I figure that's a sufficient signal that I understand enough theory

Yeah, I'm worried that there's going to be enough out of work academics competing for these kinds of jobs that the degree will start do be a hiring filter despite not really having been so in the past.

the only thing that I'm sure of is that if the econ job market was barren for a couple years after 2008 it's sure as hell not going to be any better when 2021 rolls around.

Even when schools started to hire more there was such a highly competitive pool of applicants that getting a callback was much more difficult. I'm not willing to take that gamble
