things i suspect because I just listened to a history of the reformation i) history is not over and in ways none of us can even imagine sober ii) atheism is probably best seen as a western christian heretical sect (and thats fine)

I feel like this is true not only for ideas but also art, culture, etc. Then a part of me feels like it's very unlikely we live in a period of cultural / ideological stagnation and more likely this is a just a failing among those who expect radical disruption. Honestly no clue.

I think this as well - in fact I’ve specifically thought this about this very era. There’s a couple of centuries or so of ideological creativity in Europe starting from around the reformation, but since then Europe’s intelligentsia have just been refining those views.
