Importantly it didn't turn out poorly the other times. It just failed to help. By the time the Empire phase kicked in it was a welcomed relief from constant civil war of a failing republic. The dictator mechanism wasn't used for the transition. Rather the consulship & legions.

Absolutely loved the Storm before the Storm by
@mikeduncan which informs a lot of my thinking here. My basic belief is that it *would* help in this instance. I don't think Trump would have lasted long as a Caesar.
