Christianity would have been better served by oral transmission alone an actual text is insufficiently protean and contains a ton of attack surfaces for correct but dumb criticisms

sola fide is a morally transparently awful doctrine that no one would have bothered with absent scriptural support and im still mad about people actually reading the Bible closely enough to find justification for it why couldnt Luther have fixated on something less repugnant

Im sure there are some advantages to textual bases for belief but my hunch is that they become net impediments once ppl become literate at rates sufficient to actual read the text anyway thats what ive learned all hail the Christianity of letterless medieval peasants

was thinking the other day: the Reformation was important - Europe spilled blood for 200 years as a result, freedom of religion became enshrined in the US bill of rights. freedom of speech is closely related (basically, freedom to express belief)
-
unexpected consequence: the US enshrined freedom of speech into bill of rights, unknowingly enshrining the freedom of scientific inquiry into US bill of rights

You realize it's just the same old thing again. The emperor Constantine had to drag all the bishops together in AD325 at Nicea to get them to stop arguing. And that still didn't work
