I distinctly remember "meme" being commonly used around that time, but it had a different meaning than today. It was closer to the original meaning of a self-replicating thought-form. It was commonly used by liberals to sneer at conservative arguments...

with the implication that said arguments are analogous to a virus and aren't really free speech. "Meme" subsequently developed a more positive meaning and mostly refers to Internet humor. "Viral" developed a positive meaning as well. The word "meme" is a meme.
