this is interesting the general pattern seems to be that manhood is Attained via trial and ritual and womanhood . . . mostly just occurs by default? but, at least in the West it seems like trans women are more likely to be eyed critically than trans men

wrt trans women being eyed more critically: - base rates? - seems much harder for trans women to pass (higher bar for femininity? / something biological?) - maybe revealing about status (moving from protective to protected class met with suspicion?)

consider that men, who I presume would be the gatekeepers of manhood, might be nice to trans men not because they’re accepting but because part of manhood is being nice to women.

hmmmmmm this feels v cynical and incorrect to me but i have no evidence i'm more inclined to think men usually *literally can't tell* when someone is a trans man (i heard somewhere, wish i could find source, that back when only men wore pants, women were able to pass as men --

now that’s very interesting. I think it’s much easier to visually identify trans men than trans women

That's interesting! The received wisdom (I think??) is that people tend to identify women more by the lack of masculine features than the presence of feminine ones eg tits + moustache is mixed but tends to net out masculine which would make trans women less noticeable on avg

i just remembered intrasexual competition, maybe that's a factor in the (perceived?) amount of criticism
