This isn't really a matter of budget, or faithfulness. It legitimately may be one of the most dense scifi epics ever made and I don't know if anyone has managed to fully peel apart its layers.

Some of it may be prespoiled but I think I read Shadow maybe ten years back and found it so impenetrable that I do not expect this will be a major issue :)
